A Useful Vessel

God’s will for each of us is that we would “be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, and meet for the Master’s use, and prepared unto every good work” (2 Timothy 2:21). The Biblical goal / pursuit of the Christian is Christ likeness. One who reflects Christ is a “vessel…[useful] for the Master’s use.” In this series we consider God’s Word as it lays out for us the way in which we can become “Useful Vessels.”

2 Timothy 2:20-21 – “A Useful Vessel for the Master—Our Pursuit” Part 1 – Outline (pdf) – This message begins a new series called “A Useful Vessel.” In this first message we begin by looking at our pursuit of usefulness and the conditions in order to be a “vessel meet for the Master’s use” that Paul gives to Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:21.


2 Timothy 2:22-23 – “A Useful Vessel for the Master—Our Pursuit” Part 2 – Outline (pdf) – In this message we continue with part 2 by looking at the characteristics of our pursuit of usefulness.  Paul challenges Timothy to the three main actions of fleeing,  following, and fellowship. All three are applicable to each of us and critical to our being a “vessel meet for the Master’s use.


2 Timothy 2:14-19 – “A Useful Vessel for the Master—Our Preparation” – Outline (pdf) – In this message we look at our preparation towards usefulness.  Paul shows Timothy that the key to usefulness in how he handles God’s Word. Mishandling it leads to error and uselessness.


Colossians 3:1-4 – “A Useful Vessel for the Master—Our Perspective” – Outline (pdf) – In this message we look at our perspective towards usefulness. In Colossians 3 we see Paul’s challenge to have a heavenly mindset. How we think is critical to how we live. Our perspective in life determines our attitude which results in action. Godly thinking leads to Godly living.


Colossians 3:5-9 – “A Useful Vessel for the Master—Our Practice of Putting Off” – Outline (pdf) – In this message we look at our practice towards usefulness. Here we see how we are to “mortify” and “put off” the earthly minded thinking which leads to sinful actions.


Colossians 3:9b-10 – “A Useful Vessel for the Master—Our Practice—Putting On” Part 1 – Outline (pdf) – In this message we look at our practice towards usefulness. Here we see consider our position “in Christ” and our progression to be “as Christ.” Paul encourages us to have our minds “renewed in knowledge.”


Colossians 3:11-14 – “A Useful Vessel for the Master—Our Practice—Putting On” Part 2 – Outline (pdf) – In this message we look at our practice towards usefulness. We look at the Christlike qualities that we are called to INTENTIONALLY “put on” in our daily practice of seeking to be a Useful Vessel.

Here we consider how to “put on” the Peace of Christ by receiving the Word of Christ in order to more effectively represent the Name of Christ.


Colossians 3:18 – “A Useful Vessel for the Master—Our Practice of Putting On Christ in Our Relationships—Wives” – Outline (pdf) – In this message we look at our practice of putting on CHRIST-likeness in our relationships. The first relationship that Paul deals with is the role of the wife in the home in her willing submission.


Colossians 3:19 – “A Useful Vessel for the Master—Our Practice of Putting On Christ in Our Relationships—Husbands” – Outline (pdf) – In this message we look at our practice of putting on CHRIST-likeness in our relationships. The second relationship that Paul deals with is the role of the husband in the home as a loving leader.

Colossians 4:2-4 – “A Useful Vessel for the Master—Our Practice of Putting On Christ in Our Prayer Lives” – Outline (pdf) – In this message we look at our practice of putting on CHRIST-likeness in our prayer life. Paul challenges us to be faithful, watchful, and thankful in prayer. He also challenges to pray specifically for opportunities and clarity to share God’s Word as a useful vessel for the cause of Christ.


Colossians 4:5-6 – “A Useful Vessel for the Master—Our Practice of Putting On Christ in Our Public Lives” – Outline (pdf) – In this message we look at our practice of putting on CHRIST-likeness in our public life.  Paul challenges us walk wisely and talk graciously in our public testimony.
